Inquiring businessmen call for improved Maple Ave conditions with parking meters and a stricter one hour limit. They urge town to expand parking space, better lighting, and more lots such as the Bailey Ave lot to aid shoppers.
Boy Scout Troop 95 will host a square dance for parents and youths on March 7 at the Old Evergreen Lodge in Springfield. Donations are $1.00, tickets at the door. Also listed are guild meeting details, a training course start, a gas station incident, a battery theft report, a chimney smoke note, an Interclub talk, a locked car incident, an ankle injury, and a child locked in a room.
Committeemen will vote to adopt the municipal budget after a public hearing next Tuesday March 4 at the regular meeting. General appropriations total 3 346952 02 up 258624 75 from last year with a 38 point tax rate increase to 7 26 per 100. Readings show 1 758382 46 to be raised by taxes and 1 188569 56 in anticipated revenues.
Jerome H. Bogner of 1449 Orchard Terrace Montclair State College senior French major is Hillside Rotary Club’s sole candidate for a Rotary Foundation Scholarship. Proceeds from an upcoming church auction and a barber shop quartet concert at Hillside High School benefit the scholarship fund.
The Hillside Republican Club endorsed New Jersey Senate President Francis X. McDermott at its February meeting as a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. A planning committee led by Anton Vit will run local election efforts including door to door campaigning and fundraising. A speakers bureau will be organized with Arnold McClow as chair to educate voters about the candidate.
Frank Zusi announces William L. Taetzsch promoted to head of the technical division at Humble Bayonne Plant. Taetzsch previously coordinated at Bayway Refinery Linden and will direct process engineering economics and recruiting. He is a Newark College of Engineering graduate and longtime Bayonne Bayway staffer. He attends First Baptist Hillside and lives with wife Juanita Sammons and four children at 120 Fairbanks Street.
Aviation ordnanceman third class Robert W. Osterling of Lavalette New Jersey was named sailor of the quarter at a February 19 luncheon by the Ocean County Board of Freeholders. He recently completed duty with the USS Ranger in Vietnam earning the Bronze Star and a promotion recommendation. He is the son of Steg Osterling Camp Hill Pennsylvania and grandson of Mrs. William Osterling of Rt. 22.
Cadet Joseph J. Pydeski of Essex Catholic High School Newark is named to the Commandant's List at the US Air Force Academy Colorado. He belongs to the class of 1972 and will receive a silver wreath and be commissioned as second lieutenant with a BS degree at graduation.
Hillside School Safety Committee adopts the Green Pennant Safety Program for all elementary schools. A daily pennant signals an accident-free year, with a perfect year earning a certificate. Police notify principals of student related incidents. vehicle passengers and private property injuries excluded. General Motors sponsors the program. George Washington School staff lead the committee.
Hillside High School PTA announces rehearsals for a 40th anniversary gala to be held May 7 in the high school auditorium. Parents teachers and students are invited to join the cast with director Mrs Robert Parker and PTA chair Mrs Orrin Spielholz coordinating.
Five people were injured at 8 41 a m Monday in a collision on N Broad Street near Williamson Avenue. In the Alper car were Charles Alper 39 his wife Riva 36 his daughter Annette 13 and friend Florence Berko witz 13 all from nearby addresses with head and knee injuries. The other vehicle was driven by Silas A Rogers 46 of 64 Broome Road.
Gilbert S. Albuquerque, 21, of 16 Elm Place Irvington, was cut on the nose and scalp when his car hit the rear of a stalled truck at 1 20 a m Friday on Route 22. He said he could not stop. The truck was driven by Sylvester E Lighty of Stewartstown Pas
Radio listeners on WOR heard Fred Baldman report a missing man hole cover on Route 22 near Hillside causing bottlenecks. Police set barricades in front of 100 Route 22 on two successive days while authorities noted pavement cracks led to the cover dislodging and the state highway department was notified.
Township Clerk Louis Luehler urges dog owners who have not picked up their 1968 licenses to do so immediately as the annual renewal deadline has passed.
Walter J. Bennett a 24 year old of 46 48 Broad Street Newark was arrested at 830 p m last Thursday by Patrolmen Arthur Seale Jr and John Veachshein for being an unlicensed driver. Bail was set at 100 He was turned over to Newark Police when it was found he possessed six warrants for traffic violations in that city.
John N. Bekunchak, 21, of 508 Locust Avenue, was found dazed on Route 22 at Sayre Road in Union. He was taken to Memorial General Hospital in Union.
