Budget Hearing Set For Tuesday

Committeemen will vote to adopt the municipal budget after a public hearing next Tuesday March 4 at the regular meeting. General appropriations total 3 346952 02 up 258624 75 from last year with a 38 point tax rate increase to 7 26 per 100. Readings show 1 758382 46 to be raised by taxes and 1 188569 56 in anticipated revenues.

GOP Club Endorses Senator McDermott for Governor

The Hillside Republican Club endorsed New Jersey Senate President Francis X. McDermott at its February meeting as a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. A planning committee led by Anton Vit will run local election efforts including door to door campaigning and fundraising. A speakers bureau will be organized with Arnold McClow as chair to educate voters about the candidate.

Sailor Osterling Honored by Ocean County Freeholders

Aviation ordnanceman third class Robert W. Osterling of Lavalette New Jersey was named sailor of the quarter at a February 19 luncheon by the Ocean County Board of Freeholders. He recently completed duty with the USS Ranger in Vietnam earning the Bronze Star and a promotion recommendation. Five Injured In Broad Street Collision

Five people were injured at 8 41 a m Monday in a collision on N Broad Street near Williamson Avenue. In the Alper car were Charles Alper 39 his wife Riva 36 his daughter Annette 13 and friend Florence Berko witz 13 all from nearby addresses with head and knee injuries. Radio listeners on WOR heard Fred Baldman report a missing man hole cover on Route 22 near Hillside causing bottlenecks. Police set barricades in front of 100 Route 22 on two successive days while authorities noted pavement cracks led to the cover dislodging and the state highway department was notified.

John N. Bekunchak, 21, of 508 Locust Avenue, was found dazed on Route 22 at Sayre Road in Union. He was taken to Memorial General Hospital in Union.
