County Hikes Tax Rate to 7.34 with Budget Adopted
The Township Committee adopted a 1969 municipal budget of 3,346,952.02 with $1,758,382.46 to be raised by taxes after a public hearing with little opposition. Finance Commissioner Marvin Corwick criticized a 9 point county tax rise that increased Hillside’s rate to 7.34 per hundred. He urged citizens to form a committee to challenge the state and county method, noting possible savings if changed. The meeting also approved a civil service ordinance and salary ranges, with raises for fourteen employees and objections from Police Commissioner Carmen Ferrigno over maximums. Additional ordinances covered police and fire pay, education increments for officers, and codification funding.
