Hillside police officers and detectives faced direct gunfire while pursuing two alleged Newark bank robbers through Hillside streets. The arrest occurred as children left Hillside Ave School and George Wallington School, with bystanders noting the officers’ fearless actions and securing the area.
The township introduces a civil service ordinance on first reading to standardize job classifications and salary ranges for town employees. It aims to equalize pay for similar positions, with public hearings set for March 4. The measure includes longevity benefits and potential cost of living increases, while a HUD grant contract for John A. Desch Memorial Park is reviewed for execution.

Mrs Emmet T White Sr 87 former member and secretary to the board of education received the Hillside B nai B rith Lodge 1514 Americanism Award for over 48 years of community service. Philip Levitan lodge president praised the long overdue honor as others noted her leadership in the Woman's Club United Presbyterian Women and local groups. The ceremony included a birthday cake for her upcoming 88th birthday and remarks stressing civic involvement education and responsibility. Rabbi Eliezer Cohen Rev Richard A Fox and others spoke as Simon Mass led the ceremonies and Jack Potashkin saluted the flag.
A dramatic Monday pursuit through Newark and Hillside ended when Lt. John Senatore forced the fleeing bank robbers into a snow drift at 21 Hillside Ave. The suspects Richard Henry Harris and Louis Coleman fired at officers, caused multiple crashes, and were wounded and arrested after a lengthy chase that involved shooting near Liberty, Leslie, and Hillside avenues and a clash at Leslie Street.
Demetri Perilys, 42, of 140 Novanth St Newark, jailed on bail after trying to pass two counterfeit twenty dollar bills. The first note passed at Riley's Tavern on Long Ave near Bloy St, the second at Polish American Inn at 400 Bloy St. Companion Joseph O Rourke, 41, of 413 E Front St Plainfield, released on bail.
The 1960 Heart Fund campaign will run for a month with a Sunday canvass of Hillside residences starting February 28. Marvin Weiss, chair, says volunteers will collect kits by February 28 and emphasize residents’ generosity. If weather stops events, the canvass will move to the following Sunday.
The Holiday Mail Service will mark George Washington's Birthday as a national legal holiday with no city carrier mail delivery or window service at post offices and installations. Special Delivery will be provided and mail collection will occur from boxes in front of the Post Office. Normal service resumes Friday February 21 for Elizabeth Roselle and nearby patrons.
