The Hillside Times introduces a new column The Question asking crossing guards about who causes more problems for children crossing streets. Responses center on drivers especially during bad weather and women drivers, with complaints of speeding, running red lights, and blocking views at busy intersections, noting no fatality in Hillside.
Hadassah meeting moved to February 18 due to snow. Private showing at Westfield Rialto Theatre had Lisa as sole patron. Hillside Mayfair Theatre drew six for The Night They Raided Minsky's. Basketball tournament set for February 16 at PAL Building Hillside Ave starting 3:30 p.m. for grades 6 to 8. trophies to winners. parents invited. Brush fire at Long Ave and Gurd Ave extinguished by 4:16 p.m. last Tuesday. Hillside junior class president Miss Jane Helmstetter organized a two week trial recreational program at the girls gym with outside sponsorship from Hillside Recreation Department head Peter G Humanik. The first Friday drew growing crowds with activities like basketball volleyball ping pong and dancing increasing turnout after an away game. Supervisors Peter Delucea and Mrs Andrew Miller praised the event and hope for refreshments soon.
The B may B'nai B'rith Women of Hillside present an American flag to the Hillside PAL at a dedication ceremony on Sunday February 23 1969 at 1 00 pm at the PAL Building. Veterans who served in Viet Nam may join an honor guard by contacting Mrs Midward Masarsky at 451 6736. The flag flown over Washington DC will be dedicated in memory of Hillside youths who died in Viet Nam.
The Hillside Ambulance Squad answered 101 calls in January 1969 including miscellaneous emergencies 34 transportation 32 heart attacks 11 auto accidents 10 falls 4 fractures 4 maternities 2 mental cases 1 strokes 1 dead on arrival 1 demonstrations 1. Squad members logged over 500 volunteer hours and covered 1210 miles. One member also assisted Ironbound Ambulance Squad in Newark for 12 hours during their installation of officers.
Two tape players were stolen from automobiles parked near Center Bowl at 1319 North Broad Street late Saturday night into Sunday morning, with police alerted and investigation underway.
The Hillside area aims to raise 2400 as part of Union County Heart Association's annual drive, part of a county goal of 90000. Volunteers are being recruited for Heart Sunday February 2a to canvass neighbors, with emphasis on heart disease as a major cause of deaths in the county. Severe blizzard shutdowns hit Hillside with drifts trapping cars and blocking roads on Clark Street and Conklin Avenues. Schools closed across the area including Newark State College. Widespread outages and traffic jams challenged officials as crews struggled to clear snow and restore movement.
