The Hillside Board of Education opposed Assembly Bills 21 and 137 and Senate Bill 72 seeking mandatory transportation to private schools within 20 miles due to prohibitive costs. It supported Assembly Bill 590 raising state aid per pupil from 75 to 100 dollars and noted staff changes and new teacher appointments.
Obituary praises Paul K. Owen a devoted Hillside Public Library board member and Rotary secretary. He helped expand the library and served over a decade on its board. Friends consider naming the new workroom or stack area in his honor or establishing a Paul K. Owen Book Fund.
Arthur Rose of 208 Oakland Terrace was named chairman of Hillside Brotherhood by Mayor Carmen J. Ferrigno on February 25. The mayor urged observance of Brotherhood Week amid democratic tensions and noted Rose's recent appointment to the Hillside Board of Health and his civic work.
Lawrence Newcomb announces the Lincoln Day Dinner will be held March 2 at 7 30 P M at Shackamaxon Golf and Country Club Scotch Plains. Governor Shafer will speak and tickets cost 10 dollars from committee members and ticket co chairmen Amy Bandomer and George Symes.
The Planning Board on February 1 1967 officially adopts the Master Plan for Hillside Township. They will proceed with adopting the Zoning Ordinance and the Subdivision Ordinance next.
Hillside Camera Club offers free photo services to families of Vietnam service members. Club president Seymour Lampf heads a four member committee including Joe Loeb Phil Rosenzweig Joe Roth and Sid Enzer. Families may call Rosenzweig at 926 2909 to arrange sessions at the club studio.
Three year terms on the Board of Education went to Moe Bierman Al Attermann and Alfred J Lordi with Jack Valenti taking the one year unexpired term. Incumbent Conrad Cammarota finished fourth for three years while Irene Bowen led the field and Anthony Bullis trailed. Budget passage was overwhelming current expense 143 approving 550 opposing capital outlay 1096 approving 548 opposing.
The Township Committee will introduce the 1967 budget at its regular meeting next Tuesday February 21 with no debate during the introduction. It will be sent to the Department of Local Government in Trenton for approval and public hearings are expected March 21. Last year’s tax levy was 1,989,883.95 dollars, up $2.50 per thousand.
International Director Joftes of B n ai B rith will speak at the Hille side Lodge Amb er l anc ism Award ceremony honoring State Senator Nelson Stamm Jer. The event Monday Feb 20 at 8 30 p m in the Maple Ave Youth Center auditorium. Public invited. Joftes oversees B n ai B rith activities at the United Nations and has served as observer at Nuremberg trials and led European and Western Europe programs. He met Pope Paul in December.
Hillside Fire Department issued emergency stand-by at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and re activated Maple Ave firehouse to bolster protection after a blizzard. Fire Chief Dill led doubled shifts with 3 deputy chiefs 14 captains 45 firefighters plus reserve engines at headquarters and Maple Ave. Firemen inspected 525 hydrants and cleared snow as needed.
