The Hillside Board of Education opposed Assembly Bills 21 and 137 and Senate Bill 72 seeking mandatory transportation to private schools within 20 miles due to prohibitive costs. Budget Approved As Voters Back School Board Winners

Three year terms on the Board of Education went to Moe Bierman Al Attermann and Alfred J Lordi with Jack Valenti taking the one year unexpired term. Incumbent Conrad Cammarota finished fourth for three years while Irene Bowen led the field and Anthony Bullis trailed. Budget passage was overwhelming current expense 143 approving 550 opposing capital outlay 1096 approving 548 opposing.

Township to Introduce 1967 Budget at Next Meeting

The Township Committee will introduce the 1967 budget at its regular meeting next Tuesday February 21 with no debate during the introduction. It will be sent to the Department of Local Government in Trenton for approval and public hearings are expected March 21. Last year’s tax levy was 1,989,883.95 dollars, up $2.50 per thousand.

Firehouse Re-Activation Aids Hillside Storm Response

Hillside Fire Department issued emergency stand-by at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and re activated Maple Ave firehouse to bolster protection after a blizzard. Fire Chief Dill led doubled shifts with 3 deputy chiefs 14 captains 45 firefighters plus reserve engines at headquarters and Maple Ave. Firemen inspected 525 hydrants and cleared snow as needed.
