Hillside Education Association Bids For Higher Pay In Budget Talk

The Board of Education postpones the 1968-69 budget after a salary dispute with the Hillside Education Association. A conference is set for 8 p m Wednesday in the Administration Building. The union demands larger minimums and maximums across bachelor’s master’s and six year levels with fringe benefits. The board offers smaller increases and plans a public hearing later in January with a February 13 election on capital improvements and current expenses.

Three Car Collision Injures Louise St Jacques

Mrs Louise St Jacques 34 of 1600 Maple Ave sustained head injuries in a three car crash on Morris Ave near Harding Ave Union at 5 40 p m last Monday. Police say she was a passenger in a car driven by her husband that attempted a turn. The Ulasewich 22 of 1014 Liberty Ave struck the St Jacques vehicle and then sideswiped Ann Breitman 33 of 2809 Kathleen Ter Union. St Jacques treated at Memorial General Hospital Union.

Hillside Rotary Christmas Party and Local Fire and Theft Reports

The Hillside Rotary Club held its annual Christmas party at Hillside Presbyterian Church with a High School A Cappella choir performance. Police reported several thefts and a vehicle collision, including entry at K and K Auto Body and multiple car damage incidents on roads around Union and Clifton.

Witte Pleads For Voice In Government

Commissioner elect Jr. Arnold Witte complains the township committee ignores minority voices. He says he learned of his fire commissioner appointment via newspaper and that the decision was made at a private political meeting with no prior consultation.

Robbery At Knife Point At Angel's Sunoco Station

Donald Sorchinski was robbed of 245 dollars at knife point while closing Angel's Sunoco Gasoline Station on Route 22 Newark Cuy Mine. He described two men, one asking to use the men's room. after he turned from the lights they returned, demanded money, and fled with 145 from his wallet and an unknown amount from the change box.

Robbery Attempt Foiled By Neighbor and Police

Police captured Jacob D. Triano and Louis Savo after an anonymous tip led to a Wheelock Lovejoy Co. burglary attempt at 265 Pennsylvania Ave. They planned to steal adding machines and typewriters but were stopped inside the Newark area shop. A car registered to Savo was towed from the scene.

Freudian Lapse at Hearing Over Municipal Appointments

Sol Ostrin, defeated 1966 Township Committee candidate, interrupted a public hearing to demand Commissioner-elect J Arnold Witte be heard on appointments. He slipped into a Democratic victory remark, corrected to Republican victory, as Witte claimed he could not make year start appointments. Mayor Ferrigno defended Witte noting prior appointment mailings. Commissioner Manza commented on Ostrin’s 20 percent suggestion and the discussion continued.
