Hillside Police and the FBI probe a bank robbery at United Counties Trust on Liberty Ave. The suspects fled in a brown Chevrolet Monte Carlo after taking about $23000 in twenties and hundreds. Detectives pursue leads with no arrests yet.
Mrs. Charlotte DeFilippo announced Hillside will open a year round headquarters at Blay Street and Long Avenue to assist residents four evenings a week. Mayor Baldassano and Commissioners Wovsaniker and Corvelli will attend regularly to support the community oriented program. The facility will host civic groups and aid voter registration for new residents. Dr. E Jonathan Bell will manage meeting schedules to avoid calendar conflicts.
Mrs. Bea Zisman announces a large membership campaign for the newly formed Friends of the Hillside Public Library. Dorothy Quentzel is membership chair. various categories exist from Individual to Benefactor with contact numbers 351 2544 and 351 3036 and applications at the library.
United Counties Trust Company employees revive the Toys for Tots program in Hillside, continuing a 1968 effort that has donated about 12 000 toys to needy children in Union Somerset Middlesex counties. Hillside branch manager Arthur Homeyer notes staff volunteer support and personal donations drive the program.
Rutgers University professor Lou German spoke at a Hillside meeting on integrating the university with small firms. He described SBA loans with 9 percent rates and long terms, plus Rutgers centers in Camden, New Brunswick and Newark. He cited a loan success at a $500,000 liquor store bought for $100,000 and outlined the Minority Development Corporation goals in aiding deprived applicants. He urged businessmen to seek advice from 65 Central Ave New Brunswick or 648-5287.
Robert Bergeur was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds near Split Rock Reservation after being missing since September 2. The homicide investigation is led by Rockaway Township Police and Morris County Prosecutor's Office.
Hillside Township plans a contract to obtain 120970.12 in state CETA funds for 1978. The agreement covers January 1 to September 30 and would expand CETA programs including a new street repair effort employing eight workers. The final status hinges on next week’s vote.
Police logged a busy week as thieves struck multiple sites including Herbert Street home losses of 910 and St. Louis Avenue car theft of 1050. The Lewis Chester Agency lost two typewriters worth 2000 and a Route 22 robbery led to arrests of Jerzy Andrzejewski Kazimierz Lukaszczyk Hajbarn Wladyslaw. Additional arrests followed at Hedy's Diner and a Liberty Avenue apartment raid.
