Rahway girl wins Union County Junior Miss 1977 78
Janet Shalestik of Rahway was named Union County Junior Miss 1977 78 at Hillside High School where Hillside Jaycees sponsored the pageant. Shalestik won Scholastic Achievement and Spirit of Junior Miss awards after a new acrobatic tap jazz dance. Teresa Williams of Compton Terrace won Creative and Performing Arts for a song and dance rendition.

Principal unveils new Hillside High discipline plan
Hillside High School principal Dr. Ross Haber introduced a revised discipline program focusing on class cutting truancy and tardiness with new penalties including a zero on missed work and seven nights of office detention. The plan also adds an anti smoking health education program extended lunches a senior lounge and potential evening activities at the Community Center.

Benefit show raises funds for Brown Family Children's Trust
The country western benefit at Blue Ribbon Inn raised over 1700 dollars pushing the fund total above 3800. Police break up gambling ring in Union County probe
Union County Prosecutor Office Gambling Division arrested four on a six week probe into a betting operation. Jason Schelberg and three other men faced charges after police seized paraphernalia at his Hillside home. Outside county arrests included Arthur Henley, Arthur Davenhaver and James McGuire amid an estimated five thousand dollars weekly handle. All remained free on bail. In Hillside vandals toppled about 150 tombstones at Evergreen Cemetery during Sunday night.

Township to hold roof bid meeting for Municipal Building
A special Township meeting will review bids for the municipal roof on Tuesday December 13 at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
Township hires attorney to defend tax appeals
The Township Committee hired John E. Garippa of Kearny to handle about 50 property tax appeals valued at 42 million dollars with a basic fee of 12000 dollars plus 60 dollars per hour after 200 hours. Garippa would defend the town against appeals seeking roughly 17 million dollars in reductions. a loss on all could add 500000 dollars to the tax bill. Most appeals involve industrial firms. In other action, residents complained about pavement on Avy Street and the need for asphalt paving on Long Avenue. Mayor Baldassano said he would review the issue.
