Hillside police crack cases include false report and chase

Hillside police solved a false robbery report at Mobil Station Route 22 west in which Man uel Salgado 19 confessed after returning 179.94. Also, Scott J Andrews 22 led a high speed car chase ending with multiple charges. Tree vandalism at municipal pool and wallet theft on Route 22 noted with 179 dollars involved.

Women's club aids Hillside community projects

The Social Services Department of the Woman's Club of Hillside led a year of charitable work. Funds and materials supported East Orange and Lyons Veterans Hospitals, Vineland Research, Skillman State Schools for Boys, Grey Stone Psychiatric Hospital, and multiple health and welfare organizations. Volunteers mailed clothing, Meals on Wheels help, candy and cookie batches, and sent books, lap robes, hats, and gifts to various facilities including the Vineland School and Lisbon State Colony.

Union Y lowers building fund and renewal membership fee

Union YM YWHA on Green Lane Union will drop its building fund requirement effective January 1 1978. Families will pay one annual fee to use Y facilities including an indoor pool exercise room banquet room lounges game rooms auditorium classrooms and more. Free tours and information available daily 9 am to 5 pm and weekday evenings 7 pm to 9 pm. American Can Company declares regular quarterly dividend 62.5 cents per share payable February 25 1978 to holders of record January 20 1978.

Hillside officials warn of municipal labor crisis over contracts

Police Commissioner James C. Welsh warned of a serious crisis with Hillside municipal employees as contract talks for next year edge toward a budget cap driven impasse. Welsh criticized township attorney Parsonnel for sending a PBRC arbitration request without his knowledge.

Hearing Set On HUD Grants For Township Community Funds

Tenants discuss nine Year 1V Community Development grant applications at a January 3 1978 township meeting. Five proposals were township sponsored including four tied to an approved Recreation Master Plan totaling about 450000, plus a 14445 grant to renovate a Hillside Community Center room for senior programs. Other bids come from Hillside Historical Society United Way Visiting Nurses and the Urban League.

Brazilian exchange student Ends stay at Hillside after year

Evaldo Guimaraes, a Brazilian Rotary Youth Exchange student, spent 12 months at Hillside High adapting to American life. He joined Interact, played varsity soccer, and toured the U S before returning to Brazil to pursue electronics studies.

Public tour of municipal building addition announced

Township Clerk John Kulish says a public tour of the Municipal Building addition will follow the Township Committee Reorganization meeting on January 2, 1978 at 12 noon. The $600000 project is expected to be completed in the spring and the public is invited.

1978 Poster Contest Promotes New Jersey Show

High school students statewide are invited to design posters for the 1978 New Jersey Flower and Garden Show. Posters must be on 22 by 28 inch boards and include the show name dates and site illustrating horticulture such as trees shrubs flowers turf or a garden scene.
