Chapman Awarded Parkway Contract

The New Jersey Highway Authority awarded the contract for a 1.3 mile section of the Garden State Parkway in Union and Hillside to J. F. Chapman & Son, Inc. at 1 943 306, with Villa Contracting Co. as next lowest bidder at 1 994 031. The project includes bridges at Vaux Hall Road and Elizabeth River. A November referendum will decide permanent financing allowing sale of State backed revenue bonds at 2 percent or less, aiming to save 70 to 80 million in finance charges. The Parkway is planned from the Bergen County line to Cape May, about 180 miles, and engineers say the full route could be completed in three years as a self saving project if approved.
