Hillside High School Opens Thursday for New Term
Hillside High School will open regular classes on Thursday September 5 with new and returning students registering earlier in August. Enrollment has risen by 78 students since June. Orientation for ninth graders and new students is September 4 at 1 p.m. at the high school auditorium.

Four Held In Theft Case In Newark
Four people are detained after a theft investigation in Newark. Thomas Brown of 231 Kinney Street was held without bail for grand jury action, with three Walton brothers as material witnesses. Brown allegedly entered a toolshed at Pennsylvania and Long Avenue, stealing a generator and 150 feet of cable valued at 400 dollars from Clair Miller of Union. Detectives Lt Charles Grant and Robert Mason reported the case.

Funeral services were held Friday for Park A Herr of 1244 Robot Street who died last Tuesday at home after a long illness. A high Mass at St Catherine's Church and burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery followed at Growney Funeral Home. Herr, descended from Lancaster settlers, born in Strasburg, traced German roots to 1710. He worked for Edison Inc in 1904 then Singer Manufacturing Co as an experimental engineer, receiving patents. He helped form the Saybrook Volunteer Fire Department and remained active in fire service groups and the Singer Quarter Century Club. Survived by wife Anne K Herr two sons Herman A of Maplewood and John A of Garwood a daughter Mary C Herr five brothers seven sisters and one grandchild.

Edda Miller of Hillside Avenue School hosts Hoffi Holmfridthur Egilsdottir from Reykjavik Teeland for about six weeks this summer. Hoffi, finishing high school, plans to study English in the United States and expects to marry later. Hoffi notes there are no Eskimos in Iceland and enjoys piano and soccer.
