Funeral services for Paul Kiner, longtime resident of 946 Salem Ave, will be held Friday at 1 PM at McCracken Funeral Home, 1500 Morris Ave, Union. Interment follows at Hollywood Memorial Park. Mr. Kiner died at his home Monday after a heart illness at age 57.

Frank Kifner longtime Hasco Machinery employee Newark and Hillside civic leader died at 70. He served as vice president of Hasco for ten years and led or joined numerous groups including Hillside Kiwanis Club PAL American Legion posts committees and Red Cross chapters. He and wife Eleanor Ferguson Kifner were honored with a Americanism plaque in 1963. Survived by wife daughter four grandchildren mother brother and sister.

Three men in a stolen car fled on Route 22 after warning shots failed to stop them. Patrolman Anthony Messano was knocked down and slightly injured as the vehicle rammed the pursuing unmarked police car near 1042 Stuyvesant Aves Union. Patrolman Robert Manzo assisted in the chase.
Bnai Brith Lodge invites new and experienced bowlers to a Monday August 17 session in the Fun Pair North Broad Street air conditioned room. Joe Bloom of Bowling Corporation of America will present tips with slides. alleys open for practice after. Guests and spouses welcome, refreshments served.
Due to improper service on affected property owners the hearing on Raymond Efrus use of 640 Route 22 as a new and used car lot has been postponed from August 4 to September 1. The Zoning Board has recommended approval of the application.
The Union Junior College announces an entrance exam for prospective students for the fall term. The exam is set for Wednesday evening August 19 at 7 oclock in the Normahegan Building Lecture Hall. Prof Saul Orkin, director of admissions, says all applicants who have taken College Board Examinations must test. no new Day Session applications will be accepted after September. Also noted, Mrs Josephne Castellucio is on sick leave without pay from August 4 to September 25.
Hillside Republicans sponsor an appeals session for tax payers. Chief Voelk seeks Traffic Ordinance amendment to allow parking enforcement on public streets along North Broad Street from Ridgway Ave to the Essex county line. Police mark spaces to restore order amid frequent curb-cut changes and crowded lots.
Senator Clifford P. Gase of Rahway paid tribute to the late George W. Herlich in a Hillside Times letter. He called Herlich a public servant of integrity who lived by steadfast principles and was a gentle, loyal friend to all who knew him.
Joseph Pfeiffer twenty of Los Angeles Virginia Street was released on one thousand dollar bail for aggravated assault and battery. The assault occurred during a fight on North Broad Street August fifth when Steven Ettelberg eighteen of Harding Terrace was stabbed in the right shoulder. Ettelberg was treated by Dr Milton Lilien for a knife wound needing five sutures. Leo Fagan of Parkview Terrace said the assailant was driven away in a white car.
Paul Palefuces of 208 Energon Ave Union appeared in Municipal Court after a preliminary hearing on charges of narcotics transgression. Bail was set at 2000 dollars by Magistrate Henry Goldhor. Dennis A. Trosinski of Montgomery Ave, East Orange, received a two day jail sentence for actions tied to a stolen car case involving Stuart Willner. Charges included operating a motor vehicle on a revoked list unlawful use of the vehicle and possession of insulin syringes and hypodermic needles found in an attaché case.
An offer to purchase the rear of Lots 558 and S89 Block 213 on Hollywood Ave for 350 dollars was received by the Township Committee. Edward J. Boxheimer of 15 Hollywood Ave made the offer. Kenneth E. Hathaway was designated to appraise the property for residential use.
Miss Gloria Anne Mason of 412 Franklin Street was appointed by the Township Committee last week as temporary clerk stenographer to the offices of Defense Fire Department and Welfare Director for three months from August 10 at a salary of 30 dollars per year.
Garden State Parkway officials announce a light hearted recognition program for motorists during congestion. The program offers patience and stop and go driving skill certificates to drivers in good standing, distributed by toll collectors as a reminder that relief efforts are ongoing and drivers are not alone on the Parkway.
Union Junior College announces September 1 as the deadline to submit applications for the Evening Session in the upcoming fall semester. Admissions notes demand rose applications ahead of last year, following the daytime class selection of 440 freshmen.
