Amid stormy winds, Hillside patrolmen voted to ratify a 1975-76 contract with the Township after two years of negotiations. The agreement provides a six percent base pay increase for 1975 and 1976, a $250 rise in shape-up time allowances, and a $100 boost for clothing.
Township and police negotiators reach a settlement after a long conflict over parity with the fire department. If ratified by the Township Committee, the contract ends 17 months of disputes including traffic stoppages and unfair bargaining charges. Police may press a PERC ruling on the charges.
Superior Court Judge Harold Ackerman orders the state to widen Ramsey Ave shoulders within two weeks without closing traffic, resurface Ramsey Ave within 30 days after the Chestnut Ave overpass completion on September 15, and install a traffic light. Wynans Ave bridge must open within two weeks. Hillside officials hail the ruling as a safety win and demand state compliance after Chestnut Ave was closed unilaterally, causing traffic problems.

Robert Larson of Riverdale New York was named Head Football Coach of Hillside High at a Board of Education meeting on Monday night August 9. Larson brings extensive experience in football baseball and golf and has coached at Riverdale School George Washington High Gorton High Yonkers and helped develop players at Liberty Ave Park. He guided Riverdale baseball to a 44 win 21 loss record and posted 6 3 in his single year at GW.
Hillside prepared for a major hurricane on Monday night but received a tropical storm with minimal damage. A few downed power lines caused outages. Mayor Harold Wovsani ker praised departments and volunteers for keeping roads open and relief stations staffed during the crisis. He stayed at police HQ until the storm passed.
Police and five superior officers plan talks with the Township Committee on 1976 contracts. Police delaying until Sept 29, citing vacation. Fire superiors meet Aug 18. Committee includes Sgt. Frank DeSanto and Deputy Chief Artie Seale. Also covered: new federal Public Works act funding Hillside projects and four tentative municipal building projects.
