Towns Line Up In Zone Battle

Public hearing before the Board of Adjustment last Thursday night on a variance request by Menza's Coal Co of Newark to build two family homes on a three acre Irvington area fronting North Union Avenues etc. The meeting drew over 100 residents with 49 from Irvington and 45 from Hillside opposing. Architect Harold Kerr testified homes would be frame with brick veneer, 24 by 55 feet, two car garages. Montclair Planning Director Robert Edwards supported the project saying it would aid residential expansion. Hillside Home Owners Association questioned the board's power to grant a variance, warning changes require township ordinance. The hearing adjourned to April 3.

June Outdoor Art Show Planned by Hillside Woman's Club

At a June 1 show, Hillside High School grounds host the Outdoor Art Show from 1 PM to 4 PM with a rain date on June 8. All area schools participate and residents may enter up to three framed or unframed pictures by May 24, each entrant responsible for their own work. A May 24 committee meeting at the High School answers exhibitors questions with board members from the Woman's Club and local schools.

Measure To Control Run-Down Dwellings

A Hillside ordinance on repair, crossing and demolition of unfit dwellings clears first reading by the Township Committee to curb neighborhood decay and permit repairs. Public hearing set for April 1 with penalties up to 200 dollars or 90 days in jail per day of violation. Former Resident Passes Bar Exam

Gerald Kaplan of Maplewood has passed the New Jersey bar exam and will be sworn in at the Trenton War Memorial Building on Monday April 29 at 9 a.m. Kaplan, a Hillside High School alumnus, holds a Rutgers B.S. and Seton Hall Law degree. He is married to the former Mery Botnick of West Orange and is the son of Mr and Mrs. Robert Kaplan of Elizabeth. Passover services at Sinai Congregation in Maplewood are scheduled April 8 to 10, with sermons by Rabbi Eliezer Cohen and school programs for Sinai Hebrew School students and teens.

Patricia Duffy director of the Visiting Nurses Association of Eastern Union County rejected Commissioner Diamond's assertion that the VNA faced City of Linden friction and that the United Fund forced information sharing. She tied a proposed budget increase to a new state TB testing law and defended patient privacy, noting indigent names are withheld as standard practice.
