Former clerk pleads guilty to income tax evasion

Harry G Hyra, 54, a former Township Court Clerk with a Liberty Avenue law office, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to income tax evasion for 1969 with a $53,885 gross income. Charges for 1962-1971 were reduced. 1969 admission led to suspension from practicing before the court. Maximum penalty is one year and or a $10,000 fine.

Committee keeps capital outlay budget at 55500

Township Committee votes 4 to 0 to retain a 55500 capital outlay budget defeated 789 to 726 at the March 9 school election. Funds will rebuild two bathrooms, install window screens, and add a new security system.

Hillside Township Sees Mixed Tax Revenue and Overturned Assessment

Hillside gains 103000 from state business personal property tax funds but loses a 56000 assessment on Fun Fair Bowling Lanes. Township to build tennis courts on Gentral site

At a Tuesday caucus the Township Committee reviewed plans by engineer Armand Fioretti for tennis and paddle ball courts on a lot bordered by Gentral Ave Vine and Race Streets. The project cost 80000 with potential federal matching funds cutting township cost in half. a resolution is to be presented next week. Initial indications favor unanimous approval.

Kathleen J. Kernusz announced her candidacy for the Township Tax Collector in the upcoming November election. Moffat seeks recount of March 9 school board race

Julie Moffat asked county election officials in Westfield to recount the March 9 Board of Education election after losing by five votes. Machines at Hillside School were impounded following her letter to the State Commissioner of Education within the ten day window. Results of the recount are not expected until next week.

Hillside Jaycees Do Some Thing Walk Fourth Annual

Hillside Jaycees promote the Do Some Thing Walk on April 4 to raise funds for charities including the group’s lamp for the retarded. Chapter President Larry Coppola collaborates with Past-President Jerry Eben to recruit walkers who pledge per mile along a twenty mile Union County route.
