Do-Some-I-Walk charity event nets 2000 dollars

On Sunday April 4, 160 volunteers from Hillside schools completed the Fourth Annual Do-Some-I-Walk. The 20 mile charity walk started at 9am at the Community Center, with pledges expected to push receipts above 2000 dollars. Wendy West from A.P Morris raised over 400 dollars.

PBA negotiators pressed the Township Committee to publicly debate the police contract stalemate after fifteen months of talks. Police wives picketed outside the municipal building while mayor and officials disputed parity with the fire department and debated a proposed 38 percent hour increase.

Route 78 Opens April 14 With Ribbon Cutting

Transportation Commissioner Alan Sagner announced a ceremony for April 14 to open 2.4 miles of Interstate Route 78 from Springfield Avenue to the Garden State Parkway in Union County. Gov Brendan Byrne is expected to attend. the new section adds about 8 miles of freeway from the Parkway to Summit.

Hillside lowers property tax with state funds pledge

On Tuesday night the committee voted to use 103000 from the state to cut property taxes by three points. As a result taxes rise 22 points instead of 25. The funds came after Gov Byrne signed relief from the Business Personal Property Tax Replacement program. Also April 20 is set for a public hearing on George Kantor’s restoration shop at 550 Rie 22.

Pingry Sale Awaiting State Approval and Use Plan

State Sen. Alexander Menza introduces a bill to ratify the purchase of 30 acres occupied by Pingry School. The Education Department will pay 4.65 million for the tract to use as a facility for severely handicapped youths from Union and neighboring counties, with takeover not expected until 1978. Pingry will lease the grounds at 150000 per year. an additional 1.5 million would fund renovations. Tennis courts and several Master Square houses will remain with Pingry.

Independent bid by Rullis for Township Committee seat

Anthony O Rullis 64 of 1200 North Broad announces his run as an Independent for the Township Committee in the November election. He owns Elizabeth Monuments and has attended meetings challenging local spending as Hillside Taxpayers Association member and Hillside Elks Club treasurer. He says both parties fail the people and a genuine representative is needed.
