Maritime unions funnel money to Congressmen
The maritime unions retain about 886000 for political donations after giving 333300 to 141 lawmakers who backed the disputed shipping bill. Most money, 595000, sits in three trusts run by the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, with other major trusts from Seafarers International Union and Masters, Mates and Pilots. The influx favored incumbents who voted for the bill, while Javits of New York returned 8500 to the marine engineers union days before the Senate vote.
