Green Berets reach Astoria on Lewis Clark tribute voyage
A company of 22 Green Berets from Ft. Bragg paddled 3200 miles in 120 days from St. Louis to Astoria Oregon to honor the Lewis and Clark expedition. Gen Westmoreland praised the symbolic field training voyage. The crew included a Black service member, mirroring the original party’s York. The trip cost about $5000 beyond regular pay. They became honorary citizens of Astoria and Portland.
