Rock Festival Ends In Brawl In Watsonville

A rock festival in a pasture near a Watsonville lake erupted Monday night into a knife and club attack by motorcyclists, Mexican American youths, and surfers. One cyclist, Peter Michael Montero of Long Beach, died of stab wounds. two others, Bruce Miller and Dr Turco, were in good condition after surgery. Police sealed the area as about 3,000 youths listened to the all day concert and 150 people were stoned.

Labor Day Toll On Roads 59

Traffic accidents across the nation claimed 591 lives during the three day Labor Day weekend. The National Safety Council had estimated that 6 to 700 persons might die on streets and highways during the period from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday. The holiday toll last year was 612. The highest toll since World War II was 688 in 1968.

Defense Pressure on Discrimination Against Black Servicemen

Washington reports say the Defense and State departments push embassies and U S commands to aggressively combat discrimination against Black GIs abroad.
