Bourke B. Hickenlooper, former four term U.S. senator from Iowa and longtime Senate Republican on the Atomic Energy Committee, died at 75 in Shelter Island New York while visiting an old friend. He arrived Friday afternoon, suffered abdominal pain, and died early Saturday morning from an aorta aneurysm. He previously served as Iowa governor and later resided in Washington.
A Boeing 727 carrying 109 people crashed into the Chilkoot Mountains near Juneau eight minutes before landing. All aboard died, the worst U S aviation disaster at the time. Weather was variable. Juneau airport lacks an instrument landing system, relying on visual aids and the pilot’s altimeter.
