Roanoke Island Trades Fishing for Orchard Growth

On Roanoke Island the fishing livelihood gives way to horticulture as A W Drinkwater of Manteo and Samuel Baum of Wanchese lead fig and peach growing. The Drinkwater farm near Manteo spans 15 acres with 2500 bearing fig trees and a 14000-tree nursery. The British ambassador tasted the figs and took 28 jars for the Queen. Agricultural experts predict a widespread shift to orchards as scrub land is cleared. In Raleigh, July 1926 construction rose in several cities with Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem posting gains, while Durham and Wilmington fell. The textile sector shows signs of recovery and North Carolina eyes a large tobacco crop this year.
