New Excise Tax On Television Sets Clarified
Washington October 31 The new excise tax on television sets becomes effective tomorrow but does not apply to sets already in wholesalers and retailers hands. The Internal Revenue Service says the 10 percent manufacturer tax won t affect sets sold or shipped by midnight tonight creating pricing confusion for wholesalers and retailers. Manufacturers may add the tax to selling price boosting future purchases by the wholesaler and retailer. On future sets retailers must pass the extra cost to consumers or reduce margins. Nation's Traffic Toll Seen Heading For Record
CHICAGO Oct 31 The National Safety Council says the 1950 traffic deaths likely reach about 35,000, the highest toll since 1941. Nine months into the year fatalities total 724,580, up 11 percent from 1949, with September at 3,100 up five percent. The council cites surging auto production, with over 45 million vehicles in operation, as a major factor. Ned H Dearborn, council president, warns the safety line cannot cope with the production boom. Also noted is a chemical development, toxaphene, made by reacting camphene from turpentine with chlorine, as a promising insecticide agent.
