Washington report says next year could see the highest food prices on record as demand outpaces supply. Increased employment wages and social security benefits will lift consumer purchasing power, while price controls may be used only if prices top parity or the 1950 peak.
The Associated Press reports unseasonably warm conditions widespread with only the Pacific Coast States seeing rain. Western Oregon flood damage and several fatalities accompany record highs in the 80s and 90s across many regions. Forecasters attribute the warmth to southerly Gulf winds amid clear skies, with cooler air stalled in Canada.
Soviet deputy foreign minister Jacob A. Malik opened a U N debate opposing a three year extension for secretary general Trygve Lie. Lie left the rostrum as the discussion began. Malik urged the 60 nation assembly lacks legal authority to act on extending Lie’s term after a U S backed push. A Soviet veto blocked Lie’s re election in the security council and no new candidate was agreed upon in recent council talks.
John Boettiger fifty former son in law of President Roosevelt died after leaping from the seventh floor of a Manhattan hotel. Police said he was in a depressed state and under a male nurse care. He awakened early and asked the window opened then jumped to the sidewalk below, killed instantly. Boettiger was a longtime newspaper man and former publisher of the Seattle Post Intelligencer. He had married Anna Roosevelt Dall and later divorced. they had one child.
NEW YORK October 31 The stock market steadied after a sharp drop yesterday in the final hour Armco recovered to near its prior level while Consolidated Edison jumped after news of a dividend boost Other gainers included U S Steel J L Case Air Reduction Du Pont Santa Fe Gulf Oil and Twentieth Century Fox Losers included Jones & Laughlin Bethlehem Steel Chrysler Sears Roebuck Admiral Dow Chemical Westinghouse American Tobacco Baltimore & Ohio and U S Gypsum
National Guard planes and infantry launched a combined strafing and ground assault on Jayuya and Utuado as rebels opposed to the new constitution faced a siege. Reports put casualties at 28 dead and 22 wounded, with 1,500 to 2,000 rebels estimated under nationalist leadership.
Hand grenades and mortar shells littered over a mile of Florence Oregon beach as coast guardsmen watch for danger. Explosives, all U S made, arrived since Sunday night by cases with many boxes breaking on impact. Source undetermined. A demolition expert from Seattle is due today.
Washington October 31 voters undecided may swing Democrats or Republicans into key congressional seats and close gubernatorial races. President Truman eyed last minute campaign help and a possible back-to-work date for Congress around November 20 to 27, with foreign policy emphasized in a St. Louis broadcast. Gov Lane of Maryland faced party division as re election bid tightened.
NAOMA W Va Oct 31 A high school social science teacher now married the 11 year old girl he was accused of kidnapping. Lewis G Daniel 35 divorced father of two and Ann Tabor a student nurse wed yesterday in Portsmouth Ohio and are en route to Virginia on their wedding trip. Daniel's uncle J T Jarrell received the telegram and quoted its contents. Ann who was in Daniel's social studies class at Marsh Fork High disappeared in Charleston Sunday night. She and two other student nurses had met Daniel in a bus station restaurant. He offered them a ride back to the nurses home at McMilland hospital. Ann's classmates said Daniel held her back when they got out at the hospital saying he wanted to talk to her. A few moments later they heard a scream and he sped off.
Muddy flood crests swept western Oregon valleys leaving five dead as rivers surged through Coquille Umpqua and Rogue basins. Isolated communities faced ruined roads and bridges while families endured a third day marooned and guardsmen aided a crippled veteran and others.
Washington October 31 The Pressed Steel Car Co unveiled a plywood and plastics freight car claiming it uses twenty tons less steel than standard cars. Shown at Union Station for government officials and railroad leaders the unicel design foresees mass production early next year with a combination refrigerator box car.
In Seoul on October 31 Allied forces faced time and rising Red resistance as a U S 24th Infantry Division advance marked the day’s only notable gain on the northern peninsula front below Manchuria. A captured North Korean officer cited two Chinese divisions aiding the defense in northeast Korea. An intelligence officer at MacArthur’s headquarters confirmed ten Chinese Reds captured in North Korea.
SEOUL reports two rapid U S columns broke North Korean defenses at distant points in a bid to reach the Manchurian border. On the west a 24th Division tank column moved within 32 road miles of Sinniju. Maj. Gen. John H. Church said he would be very disappointed if the division did not reach the border. The Seventh Division, landed at Iwon on the east, pushed quickly northeast.
An AP report describes Allied field commanders awaiting confirmation of organized Chinese forces in Korea. Officers note Red China may support via ghost units from Pyongyang’s fall, with tanks reappearing across Manchurian borders. General Paik Sun Yup calls the front serious as Col. Frank W. Gillett characterizes enemy fighters as night-active and well-equipped. Reports also mention possible Lin Piao divisions in Korea and prisoners stating rushed battle deployment.
FRANK CAREY reports that a vaccine against gas gangrene shown to be caused by soil germs is being explored. A Montreal doctor cites limited progress since 1918 and notes a “bursting factor” from Clostridium perfringens may trigger immunity in animals. A separate note covers a wartreatment using liquid nitrogen that freezes and sheds warts without scarring.
Washington Oct. 31 American officials say they are not surprised by Chinese Communist troops in Korea but do not expect open large scale intervention. Two reasons cited are Red China’s drive to protect the Suiho Supong dam on the Yalu and a policy to delay Korea’s non Communist salvation by hindering UN efforts. The Suiho system, built partly on the Korean side and once the largest North Korean power source, feeds Manchurian and Harbin points. estimates of its output vary from 630,000 to about 1,000,000 kilowatts. The Tenth Corps reported counterattacks near the Chosin reservoir. (MORE ON PAGE TWO-A).
North Atlantic defense chiefs met in extra talks in Washington to finalize a Western Europe mutual defense force. German participation loomed over discussions as officials kept details secret and scheduled itinerary shifts for visits to Wright-Patterson Aberdeen and Dahlgren.
