Stockholm reports Gustaf VI Adolf proclaimed king of Sweden succeeding Gustaf V. The new ruler pledged constitutional, mild government as Premier Erlander and royal family attended ceremonies. He ascended the throne with Queen Louise by his side. their four sons and daughter Ingrid noted. Funeral arrangements for Gustaf V were announced. burial planned at Riddarholm Church with royal honors.

Bergman, who has Mexican divorce and proxy marriage to Roberto Rossellini, will likely not contest beyond the previously filed answer. Bergman and Rossellini with their son live near Rome.
South of the Manchurian border, Chinese Reds and North Korean forces press a major drive as U S and allied units resist. Reports say the sixth division of South Korea was split, with U S tanks and artillery rushing to the front. Chinese troops and women reportedly mobilized, while Allied air and ground forces slow the advance near Onjong and Taechon.
Washington reports no official confirmation of Chinese Communist units entering northern Korea though field dispatches suggest heavy action near Hamhung. North Korea and Chinese forces push along the east coast. analysts note larger unit sizes and possible retreat risk for South Korean troops near the Cho Sin reservoir. Sixteen Chinese Reds were reportedly captured in the hills south of Chosin.
In Union Maine a 13 year old boy Dennis Collins faces a murder charge after police say he shot his father Frank B Collins 39 a poultry seller in the back as he crawled from a chair to a stove The sheriff quoted the boy who said I shot daddy because I was mad at him and daddy was screeching awful The case arises from an incident in which the boy could not buy cigarettes and later decided to shoot his father Monday night Compiled by Union Desk.
Alderman Duncan reports South Carolinians vote on Nov 7 to repeal the poll tax requirement in the state constitution. If approved, ratification by the next General Assembly is needed. In Richmond Indiana a 25 year old grade school teacher Mrs Joan Ruth Ford and her 25 year old husband Ralph Ford were found dead in their apartment. A butcher knife was found through Mrs Fords heart and a shotgun lay under Mr Ford. Detective Murphy said the deaths occurred Friday night after they returned from Indianapolis where they attended the Indiana State Teachers association convention. Coroner Hill indicated the deaths appeared to be recent and not yet fully investigated. Paul Garrison superintendent of Richmond schools called them excellent teachers and noted Mr Fords six month malaria recurrence from World War Two.
British customs officials in London await a mysterious American couple to reveal plans after seizing gold totaling about 56 000 dollars. Half is secured at the Bank of England and the other half held under bond at a London airport. A New Yorker described as Mrs C Schwartz and her son, Mr Schwartz, were alleged to have tried exporting without a treasury license. Each reportedly carried about 28 000 dollars in gold.
North Carolina policyholders will save about 350,000 yearly as burglary insurance rates drop up to 31.5 percent. Insurance Commissioner Waldo C. Cheek announced the move, noting that only mercantile safe and money and securities loss within premises saw no reductions.
