Serbian forces with French help push north of the Cerna river toward Monastir as unofficial reports say they threaten the Bulgarian position in Kenali region. Bulgarian and German statements claim Serbs are checked in the Cerna valley while British troops gain ground toward Bapaume on the Somme.
Petrograd reports Teutonic forces attacked Russo-German lines in Dobrudja with a assault on Kokardja village causing defender losses. Subsequent entente line attacks in the same region were repulsed.
German troops aided by Austria Hungary and Bulgaria forced advances in Dobrudja against Russian and Romanian positions. Tuzla on the Black Sea fell after heavy fighting. The assault also took the heights northwest of Topraisari and Muldova. About three thousand Russians were captured and twenty two machine guns seized.
In Paris on October 21 ten American aviators in French army uniforms were cheered at a luncheon honoring Dr. Morton Prince of Boston. Prince recently presented to President Poincare the address to the people of the allied nations signed by 500 Americans.
Lord and Lady Cowdray donate 50000 dollars to Leeds University to endow a professorship in Spanish language and literature. The gift aims to strengthen ties between Great Britain Spain and South America.
Thomas Mendez, a mining van employee in Cusihuiriachie district, arrived in El Paso for treatment after Villa bandits wounded him. He said Villa and Salazer led 90 men into the town on September 26 and that Mendez was summoned to meet Villa, who warned him against working for an American company and threatened execution.
London reports Count Steurgka, the Austrian premier, was shot today by a Vienna newspaper publisher. A telegram received at Amsterdam from Berlin says the incident occurred this afternoon.

On Sunday morning at the preaching service Charles C Hohmann of New York City will sing. Hohmann is well known in High Point for his splendid musical talent and ability to sing. A large congregation is hoped to attend.
Dem ocrat ic leader Thomas Walter Bickett is to deliver the address at 7 30 sharp in the Guilford armory with a reserved ladies section and extra seats. He spoke at Guilford College this morning and will speak at Summerfield and High Point rallies today, with local Democrats aiding as reception committee and Carter Dalton to introduce him.

Seven crew members of the American schooner Fannie Bowen were brought to Norfolk by the Norwegian steamer Avon. The captain and first mate were lost when the vessel wrecked in mid ocean.
Berlin via London reports Russian attempts to seize trenches on the west bank of the Stokhod in Volhynia were repulsed with heavy losses to the attackers, according to an official German statement issued today.
Mr Cox, returning from a committee meeting, believes Hughes will carry Indiana and Ohio based on conversations with GOP supporters. He cites Richmond contacts and compares the Indiana mood to a Uncle Joe Cannon tale about a pig theft. He predicts a very close result whichever way it goes.

Richard Smith, missing for more than thirty years after deserting his wife, returned to Nyack New York to a shocked family. His wife had remarried and had four grown children. her second husband had died years ago. Smith had traveled around the world during his absence.
Capt Rankin declares Ohio is strongly for Wilson after surveys in Cincinnati and western cities. He notes even Republicans favor Wilson and predicts a large Ohio majority. Rankin says Kentucky also strongly supports Wilson, while Roosevelt’s Cincinnati appearance did not alter the outlook.

No organized fort will raise money in High Point today for Syria and Armenia relief. Offerings will be taken in churches tomorrow and a large sum is expected to be sent to the national committee in New York to help prevent starvation among the stricken.

Mrs. J. H. Dobbs, respected resident of 219 Lindsay Street, High Point, died this afternoon at her home after suffering age related infirmities. She is survived by two children J. H. Dobbs and Nellie W. Dobbs. Funeral arrangements were not finalized.
