Adrian Newton Steps Down As Court Clerk
RALEIGH AP The appointment of John R Morgan to succeed Adrian Newton as clerk of the State Supreme Court was announced Monday by Chief Justice Susie Sharp. Newton 75 will step down Nov 30 after 35 years as court clerk dating from Oct 14, 1941. Morgan 28 will be sworn Dec 1. he has been assistant clerk since Dec 1 1974 and was with the tort claims division of the state Attorney General's Office before that. He is a Salisbury native, Pfeiffer College and UNC Law School graduate, married to Beth McGregor of Forest City. Newton's retirement leaves a void, Sharp says, given his knowledge of court traditions and procedures. He previously held roles in Thomasville, Wake Forest tennis captain, Davidson County judge, unemployment commission counsel, and Supreme Court clerk since 1945, turning down a World Court offer in 1945 to stay near his wife and five children.
