October CPI Rise Reduces Average Purchasing Power
The October increase pushed the consumer price index to 12.9, meaning $12.29 buys the same as $10 did in 1957-59. A slight drop in the average work week and higher prices cut purchasing power for about 45 million workers. The average gross paycheck fell to $110.67, down 20 cents from September, with after tax purchasing power near the prior year for single workers and about 1.2 percent higher for workers with three dependents.
One Dead Five Missing In Darlington Hotel Fire
A three story Park Terrace Hotel fire in Darlington early today killed at least one person and left five guests unaccounted for at mid morning. Twenty-one guests were registered. a body was found hours later but not identified. Fire crews from Florence, Hartsville and Lamar aided the Darlington department as flames threatened nearby Rose's store. The bulk of searching was not expected before late today or Thursday.
