Border Fighting Heavy Near Cambodian Border
Across the Saigon area Thanksgiving saw the heaviest fighting in two months as 255 enemy soldiers were reported killed in five engagements. Two American helicopters were shot down, with 15 Americans killed and 19 wounded in one landing-zone battle. U.S. casualties totaled 21 dead and 37 wounded. 10 South Vietnamese were killed and 20 wounded. The fighting centered in Tay Ninh and Loc Ninh districts along a 100 mile border. The 1st Air Cavalry Division and 25th Infantry Division supported heavy clashes, including a 26 hour fight that ended with 96 enemy dead and 6 S Vietnamese militiamen, 3 U.S. soldiers killed, and 14 government troops wounded. The report notes reinforcements and ongoing combat in the border region.
