Third Division Marathon Men Endure Four Campaigns Across War

Doughboys of the Third Infantry, largely from Washington and Oregon, earned the nickname Gypsy Troops for fighting in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. Since landing in French Morocco on Nov 8, 1942, they faced nearly 300 days in combat with fierce frontline strain. They captured Casablanca and Palermo, halted a 2000-vehicle German convoy at Montelimar, and endured heavy losses while pushing through Sicily, Italy, and France to the Vosges.
