AFSC Emerges From Small Philadelphia Meeting To Global Relief
The American Friends Service Committee began in 1917 with 14 Quakers in Philadelphia amid U.S. entry into World War I. It grew into a worldwide relief and peace organization, aiding victims in Russia and Spain, supporting labor disputes in North Carolina, and running peace caravans and seminars at the United Nations. The Southeast regional office operates from Greensboro with services across the region, funded largely by voluntary contributions, and it was Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 1947, though not officially connected to the Society of Friends.
