The United States sought diplomacy to free about 60 Americans and 1600 other Westerners held by Congo rebels as Belgian paratroopers could be flown in only as a last resort. Acting Secretary Ball oversaw sensitive negotiations as Congo forces closed on Stanleyville and rebel-held areas.
In Beaufort North Carolina 45 boat menhaden fleet led by the Montauk reached harbor after a 24 hour battle at sea Ams Agansett sank in mountainous waves and 16 crewmen were rescued One crewman Lucius V Blackwell from Heathsville Virginia drowned planes searched the area while Cape Fear and Cozart limped in fuel and leaks hampering towing Sailors Can Sacer Segens and White Ridge Benns aided in rescue operations onlookers report the Amagansett crew losses and legal follow ups prompt continuation on page 12-A
Beaufort North Carolina AP reports a crewman aboard the Amagansett recounts a night of peril at sea as the ship sank after dawn Friday in the Atlantic. Other ships in the menhaden fleet reached Beaufort by Saturday morning while some beached near Cape Lookout.
Three surviving crew members of PT109 recalled John F. Kennedy saving their lives after their boat sank. They described him as cool and in the thick of it, with Maurice Kowal noting Kennedy’s quiet command at Tulagi. Newcrewmates Charles Harris and William Johnston added recollections of the August 2, 1943, action in the Solomon Islands.
In Iowa, President Johnson joked about needing a smart boar as voters turned out in campaigns. A jury of York shire producers selected the animal raised by Cedar Rapids families as “Mr. High I. Q.” The event drew Paul and Peterson among others during a Des Moines State Fair show.
New York AP reports plans for Kennedy memorial rites on the first anniversary of his assassination. Masses and prayers will be held at St Matthews Cathedral in Washington and the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston with several clergymen officiating. Arlington National Cemetery will see 21 wreaths laid. Mayor Jonsson urged private remembrance over public ceremonies.
News reports state Mrs Kennedy will remain with relatives and not attend memorial services. Her children Caroline and John Jr will have upcoming birthdays while Mrs Kennedy stays with family including Princess Radziwill and Kennedy relatives.
In Chicago a federal judge prepared to rule on a railroad request for a restraining order to bar a strike set to start at 6 a.m. Monday. Negotiations continued as unions reported progress toward a three year contract involving over 367 000 workers with wage raises totaling 27 cents per hour.
