Increased Momentum In Traffic In Stocks

In New York on November 20 the stock market regained momentum after a profit taking dip. Demand surged for low priced southern and southwestern railway shares, about a dozen hitting new year highs with gains from fractions to nearly 5 points. Total first half hour volume exceeded 315000 shares as Norfolk and Southern advanced.

Protestant Need Is Trained Force to Spread Truth

Philadelphia Nov. 20. Dr. D. D. Forsyth, corresponding secretary of the Methodist Episcopal board, reports a shortage of trained ministers as a major Protestant problem. He cites 101,000 churches with only 15 percent full-time ministers, 8 percent part-time, 54 percent absentee pastors, and 13 percent without pastors, noting that about half the churches are not open on Sundays. He warns churches decay where absentee ministers serve and urges cooperation among home mission workers, calling for denominations to unite as allies rather than competitors.

Mabel Normand Loses Suit In Court Motion

In Los Angeles on November 20, Mabel Normand’s libel suit against Mrs. George W. Church was quashed in superior court. Judge Hartley Shaw upheld the demurrer, ruling Normand had no legal right to seek damages where Mrs. Church sued for divorce citing the actor’s alleged behavior. Counsel said an appeal to the state supreme court would follow.
