County groups push for sales tax plan across 25 counties
Senator Hector McGeachy and Rep. Sam Johnson head a pro tax campaign joined by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. They expect the 15 percent voter petition to trigger county elections as officials note a potential shift in the state’s revenue structure from property tax to sales tax. Local governments have pledged to cut or avoid property tax hikes if the sales tax passes, with support for a broad-based regional rollout. More than 2.9 million residents would be affected as the proposal advances.
