Washington officials expect North Vietnam to increase troop infiltration into South Vietnam after months of decline. The potential buildup could threaten Nixon’s withdrawal timetable and pressure for concessions, as weather improves along routes like the Ho Chi Minh trail.
North Vietnamese troops struck a Mekong Delta task force HQ and hit two American camps in the central highlands, killing 36 allied troops and wounding 125. South Vietnamese losses were heavy with 23 percent of Marines and navy personnel at the delta base killed or wounded. The tally included 27 South Vietnamese killed and 98 wounded in a night assault by 500 enemy soldiers. Allied claims put 75 enemy killed with 66 bodies found near the camp perimeters. The day marked one of the war year’s heaviest losses and followed intensifying attacks that President Nixon linked to withdrawal timing. The weekly report tallies 1,879 enemy killed and 1,297 South Vietnamese killed, with American fatalities rising to 39,232 since 1961 and enemy totals at 566,501.
Three American GIs freed by the Viet Cong after months in jungle camps will fly home this Saturday. Initial tests show no malaria, and they are reported in good shape at Long Binh Army Hospital. The release brings total American prisoners freed since February 1967 to 21, as Pentagon figures show 346 captured and 978 missing in action.
In Chicago Judge Hoffman sentences Black Panther leader Bobby Seale to four years for contempt of court amid a high profile trial of eight men on conspiracy charges linked to plans to disrupt the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Seale’s mistrial followed by bursts led to him being bound and gagged at one point.
Seale is set April 23 for trial on riot conspiracy charges. The 32 year old was hounded and gagged Oct 29 after outbursts, carried into court Oct 30 and 31, then the order was rescinded. Judge Hoffman adjourned after Seale questioned a California sheriff deputy, and rulings on contempt and mistrial followed. Seale is not free on bond and has been held nightly in Cook County jail on a fugitive warrant from New Haven for a murder case. Other defendants include Dellinger, Hayden, Rubin, Hoffman, Weiner, Fraines, and Davis.
Army specialists James H. Strickland and Willie A. Watkins among three POWs released by Viet Cong spoke by phone to relatives from Saigon and Sumter. Strickland, 22, said he weighs down 20 pounds since capture 21 months ago and has foot blisters but feels fine. Watkins, 22, described as in fair condition and under medical care. The Army said the three would fly home to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Saturday.
Patrick Dolan an 18 year old son of Swift and Co. Brazil vice president was abducted on his way to the American School. He was shot and buried on a farm near Sao Paulo. Police say ransom of 12500 was demanded and later paid in a car at a Sao Paulo cemetery before the funds were retrieved. Suspects Jose Dias Rezende and his son were arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder. The body likely to be flown to Kansas City Missouri for family services.
Honolulu AP Barry Goldwater defended Spiro T. Agnew’s antiwar critique calling it accurate and piercing and said Agnew could be boomed for president before his turn. He praised Agnew’s remarks as reflecting the majority while labeling some protesters as impudent snobs and dismissed leftist media attacks. Goldwater urged Republican unity behind Nixon’s Vietnam policy and said a few demonstrators may be sick with delirium treason.
