President Johnson, in Austin, says he aims to achieve a broad national consensus to wipe out obstruction and paralysis and help seat a nation without rancor and a world without fear. He spoke Saturday night as part of his push for unity and progress.
President Johnson, delivering a Texas commencement address, urged a nationwide knowledge push to build the Great Society. He spoke of liberty, peace, justice, and education, aiming to unite the nation and end obstruction to unleash future energy, while noting his Texas roots and academic honors.
Gavin won the 1960 North Carolina GOP gubernatorial nomination in a decisive primary, with 10,156 votes to 1,728 for Charles Strong and 404 for Donald Badgley out of 361 of 2,164 precincts. Edward H. Smith led W Hall Young for the 10th District congressional nomination, while Clifford Bell led Robert Flynt for lieutenant governor. Insurance candidates were Ralph Pfaff and John Clifford. Strong resigned the pastorate amid heated intra party clashes as the GOP moved toward its first statewide primaries in years.
In Raleigh a tight Democratic runoff narrows to a contest between Scott and Blue for the second spot behind lieutenant governor. Final returns show Scott leading Blue with 165,540 to 158,748 as Jordan trails. Labor Commissioner Crane and Insurance Commissioner Lanier win renomination. Scott is a former state Grange master. In Raleigh veterans Harold Cooley and two Democratic incumbents clinched renomination amid intra party fights. Cooley, prominent House Agriculture chair, vies for lieutenant governor while James C. Gardner of Rocky Mount and John Y. Thedheck seek congressional renomination. The Warren Commission findings loom large as nationwide interest grows in the Dallas assassination case and the commission plans to complete its final report with a heavy, exhaustive review.
In Raleigh AP report former judges Richardson Preyer of Greensboro and Dan Moore of Canton led the Democratic gubernatorial primary, narrowly missing outright nomination. Beverly Lake, the conservative candidate, conceded after midnight. With 1,824 of 2,164 precincts reporting, Preyer led with 225,857 votes, Moore 205,581, Lake 172,183, followed by smaller totals. The race was noted as the state’s longest and most expensive campaign in years.
In early returns from the Fourth and Fifth Congressional districts, Cooley leads Albright in the Fourth with 34 118 to 22 634 while Scott tops Freeman 19 825 to 13 690 in the Fifth. Henderson outs Chalk in the ard with 9 578 to 1 760. The Fourth District contest drew the most attention as Albright attacked Cooley with strong conservative Democratic backing including U.S. Sen. Sam J. Ervin. The race featured Bell Baker era campaign dynamics and public debate over education and labor issues. Beverly Lake’s cautious campaign contrasted with the more aggressive 1960 race tactics, as Richardson Preyer campaigned nationwide on education and wage issues.
