Lake’s 205000 backers dominate the June 27 Democratic runoff for governor with Preyer and Moore courting his bloc. Lake was eliminated in the May primary. turnout hit a record 726000 as Preyer led, Moore trailed, and Republican Gavin won his nomination for November.
The U S Supreme Court in a unanimous ruling reversed a Montgomery County Alabama Circuit Court order barring the NAACP from conducting intrastate business in Alabama. Justice Harlan said to vacate the permanent injunction and allow the NAACP to qualify to do business while sending the case back for prompt Alabama action.
