Paris May 24 An official Italian report from the war office via Havas says Austrian warships bombarded the Italian eastern coast but were forced to withdraw after a short cannonading. The momentous statement follows a broader declarations that Germany has declared war on Italy and fighting has begun.
London May 24 Italy formally declares war on Austria Hungary ending its triple alliance status. Germany reportedly backs Austria Hungary. Italian army and navy mobilize. martial law in Trentino. Petrograd notes a possible Austro German withdrawal to shorten the western front and Bruges evacuation.
