London dispatch reports King Victor Emmanuel signed a bill granting the government extraordinary powers for the duration of the war after the Senate vote of 262 to approve Premier Salandra's measure. Enthusiastic demonstrations followed as the king observed, with applause and calls of Long live Italy from senators officers and galleries. Prince Colonna presented the bill and urged a just war to aid oppressed nations.
A Journal dispatch from Hom says Austria is concentrating large forces in the forest along the Upper Adige via Paris with operations centered around May 22. Genevia reports intensified military movements as tensions rise near the border.

Statesville reports the marriage of Miss Neta Caldwell to James Hastings of Fort Monroe Virginia. The ceremony occurred in Phoebus on May 15 after Miss Caldwell deceived family by traveling to Concord. Hastings, from Cornelius, is an artilleryman at Fort Monroe.
The official gazette issued a decree authorizing military authorities to take control of all Italian railroads, with the measure taking effect last night.

Warsaw May 22 Robert Taylor of Mount Olive is in town to promote a new weekly county paper to be published in Warsaw by Taylor and co partner Fred R. Mintz of the Mount Olive Tribune. Mintz visited last week on the same mission. They plan to consolidate all Duplin papers into one and aim to produce the county’s largest and best paper.
