War reports from Rome and London describe Italian forces advancing near Caporetto and Cervignano with Austro German pressures on the eastern front. Allied lines in the west face German gas attacks while Britain notes cabinet reshuffles and naval moves as Italy aligns with new allies.
The Italian ministry of marine says a steamer arriving at Barletta reports at midnight near the Gargona promontory an Austrian warship with a heavy list being escorted by four torpedo boats. It may be the vessel driven from Sdarletta after firing several shots.
On May 25 the German and Austrian ambassadors to Italy, Prince von Buerow and Baron von Macchio, left Rome and arrived in Chiasso Switzerland at 9 30 this morning. They were welcomed by Swiss authorities.
Baron von Maccchio the Austrian ambassador to Italy and Prince von Schoenburg Harenstein the Austrian ambassador to the Vatican, with their staffs, depart Rome by special train at eight this evening for Vienna. Prince von Buelow the German ambassador to Rome and the minister to the Vatican with their staffs depart for Berlin at 9 30 tonight.
The Associated Press reports that in Peking on May 25 a treaty between China and Japan was signed this afternoon.
A Tokyo dispatch reports that at 3 p.m. on May 25 two treaties covering negotiations over the Chantung peninsula Manchuria and Mongolia were signed and exchanged between China and Japan along with a note on other questions. The note’s contents were not disclosed.
Harwich reports a British torpedo boat destroyer brought two German airmen a sub-lieutenant and a mechanician to port after forcing a Taube aircraft to land due to engine trouble. The aeroplane was subsequently sunk.
President Wilson stated he had not considered calling Congress in an extraordinary session in October. He attributed his focus to other matters and indicated there would be more to attend to afterward.
Berlin via London May 25 General Aiackenssen renewed his offensive against the Russians north of Przemysl and yesterday captured 21,000 prisoners according to an official Berlin statement released today.
The New York Court of Appeals upholds the second Becker murder conviction for the Rosenthal case. Becker faces death unless executive clemency by Governor Whitman or a U S Supreme Court reversal occurs.
Tulsa flood stage reached 14.5 feet before receding today. An unknown boy drowned after falling from a bridge linking Tulsa and East Tulsa. South of the city floodwaters continue to cover hundreds of acres of land.
A commission of 15 Mexican school teachers 1 man and 14 women appointed by General Carranza arrived in New York to study American schools colleges and libraries. They will stay in the United States for at least a year.
The funeral of Charles Frohman the theatrical manager and producer who died aboard the Lusitania was conducted in New York today with services in four other cities arranged by actors and actresses who had worked with him.
North Carolina Supreme Court declares the 1920 law granting women the right to serve as notaries public unconstitutional. The ruling says only a constitutional amendment can grant that right, with Chief Justice Clark and Justice Brown dissenting. The decision affects Mrs. Noland Knught of Asheville, the first woman named under the statute.
Delegates from First and Second Reformed churches of High Point joined the Reformed Classis session in Newton. Talks covered consolidation of Catawba and Claremont, with property valued up to 100000, and reports showed First church growing to 721 members while Second trails. The graduating class of High Point high school entertained with speeches and music, boasting 35 graduates in three courses.
The xivth annual Salem Female College commencement featured the Lehman memorial steps erected for 50 years of teaching. Miss Mary Louise Strowd led the class day exercises as alumnae reunion drew the largest turnout. Mrs Patterson paid tribute to the late Mrs Stonewall Jackson educated at the college. The Creation was sung at the musical program and Alphonso Smith of Virginia University will deliver the literary address.
The Hague notes protest the Lusitania sinking as the Netherlands joins the United States in demanding action. Several Dutch nationals died when the liner was torpedoed, and the note mirrors the U.S. position.

A river guards and rangers party was attacked six miles from the border below Valentine. After a lengthy fight the Americans retreated and their horses were seized. Ranger Bates and five Sitters are reported missing. Bates reportedly killed two Mexicans weeks earlier. A Valentine posse was dispatched to the scene.
Amsterdam via London May 25. All property of the British American Tobacco company placed under German supervision. James B. Duke is president of the company capitalized at 55 million dollars. A principal German subsidiary at Dresden was sold to Germany in November with British board of trade consent.
