CAPE TOWN AP Dr Christiaan Barnard world first heart transplant surgeon faced a Cape Town Supreme Court divorce suit. Judge Theron ordered conjugal rights restored by July 20 or show cause by July 30 why a divorce decree should not be granted. Barnard was abroad, left for Evos North America and was believed in Rome. The case cited custody terms and Barnard’s frequent overseas travel. His wife Aletta Barnard seeks amicable terms amid a public life clouded by celebrity relations.
About 600 National Guardsmen acting on orders from Gov. Bob Scott cleared dormitories at North Carolina A and T State University with gunfire and tear gas. One guardsman was wounded. seven people injured since midnight including five police officers and one student. Police reported weapons found and a curfew extended. Hundreds were taken into custody as he campus evacuated amid sniper fire and missiles.
A US Air Force ground crew chief, Sgt. Paul A. Meyer, 23, from Poquoson Virginia, stole a four engine C130 Hercules transport from Mildenhall Air Base around 5 a.m. and flew toward the English Channel. The craft is presumed down at sea after about 12 hours with no further radar or radio contact, and reports say he had radio contact with his wife in Virginia before communications ceased.
