Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan transfer into the lunar landing craft Snoopy, perform initial checks, and prepare for a high risk descent near the Sea of Tranquility while John Young remains in orbit aboard Charlie Brown. The mission aims to test landing procedures ahead of Apollo 11.
Apollo 10 sails through a busy lunar orbit with LEM and CM undocking, separate orbits, and rendezvous. Stafford and Cernan transfer to the LEM, perform multiple burns, dock, and prepare to jettison the lunar module, as Young remains aboard the command module.
Greensboro Mayor Jack Elam ordered an 8 PM to 5 AM curfew and a state of emergency after police clashed with snipers at North Carolina A and T University. Willie James Grimes, 20, of Winterville, was killed in Scott Dormitory as crowds disrupted James B. Dudley High School. Police reported gunfire and rock throwing near the campus, with one cruiser hit but no officers hurt.
President Nixon selects Warren E. Burger to succeed Earl Warren as the 15th chief justice. The 61 year old midwesterner is a noted strict constructionist and veteran of 13 years on the U.S. circuit bench. If confirmed swiftly, Burger will take the helm next term, with Warren retiring at 78.
Washington AP reports living costs rose six tenths of 1 percent in April, pushing the consumer price index to 126.4. The National Bureau of Labor Statistics notes the past three months show a 7.6 percent annual rate, the steepest since 1956. Food housing and medical care rose seven tenths, clothing six tenths, transport two tenths.
CHICAGO AP The Chicago Teachers Union struck the board of education and the city’s 523 public schools after hours of talks failed to settle a contract dispute. About 600,000 students stayed home as pickets formed at daybreak.
