Raleigh AP reports the North Carolina Senate gave final approval 34 to 15 for a gas tax increase to two certis a gallon, the highest in the nation, starting July 1 as part of Gov. Bob Scott's tax package. The measure passed despite a 33-16 affiliate amend. The Senate also backed osteopaths practicing medicine, child day care licensing, and related budget plans. The House supported a $200 million mortgage loan program for low income homeowners and considered tax provisions on school buses and other items.
North Carolina moves toward a 9 cent per gallon gas tax with a pay as you go road plan highlighted by Sen. Ralph Scott. The Senate approved a 2 cent rise on second reading as Gov. Scott’s administration promotes flexible highway funding to forego future bond issues. If final approval comes, motorists would face the nation’s highest state gasoline tax.
