American forces join British units on the front amid renewed German activity in Flanders and Picardy. Dispatches say US troops, the first to fight in the zone, are training with the line and may participate in a northern offensive. Artillery duels continue near the Lys and Somme fronts as air power grows in importance.
One address from out of the county will be delivered for the Guilford courthouse cornerstone event on May 22. George S. Norfleet of Winston-Salem will speak as grand master of North Carolina Masons. The grand lodge meets at 10, cornerstone laid at 1, with High Point Masons in attendance at West Market street site.
Washington May 17 casualty list shows 106 names with categories: killed in action 15 died of wounds 6 died of disease 4 died of gas poisoning 1 wounded severely 12 wounded slightly 60 missing in action 8. The list includes Private Fred L Hasshaw of Murphy North Carolina who died of disease.
Durant Oklahoma May 17 reports and discussions marked the second day of the 58th Southern Presbyterian General Assembly session. The body met yesterday and elected Rev. James I. Vance of Nashville moderator and heard committee reports. A special committee was to report a message of confidence to President Wilson.
London May 17 British aviators dropped bombs on Saarbrucken factories and railway stations and started a fire. An official statement says five enemy machines were destroyed and one British plane was lost in the raid. On the western front 37 German airplanes were accounted for and 11 British aircraft missing.
A German commission studying the birth decline recommends compulsory marriage for Germans before age 20. The plan includes state financial aid and penalties for noncompliance and for married couples who remain childless.
Charles Norfleet of Winston-Salem will visit High Point Monday to urge local businessmen to recruit Y M C A workers for France. He will address a Commercial Club assembly at 8 PM, stressing wartime service as a practical expression of patriotism and urging all men to attend.
Captain Antono Siroix Resnati of the Royal Italian Flying Corps perished at noon today after piloting a Caproni biplane from Washington to New York and back. The incident occurred at Hempstead flying field.

The program blends patriotic, classical and popular selections with meticulous instrumentation and a six district Red Cross drive backdrop. A workers meeting follows at the Commercial club at 7 30 pm to plan the local canvass through Saturday.
Dr. W T Whitsett files for re election to Guilford County board of education sparking a four candidate race for three seats. Dr Dred Peacock and Charles H Treland join the field along with Dr C S Gilmer as possible contenders ahead of a May 18 primary deadline.

Atlanta May 17 The general conference of the Methodist Episcopal church south shows dwindling interest. Few delegates remain in their seats as Bishop W R Murray is rapped for order. Rev G H Thompson leads devotional service. Bishop Murray surrenders chair to Bishop W R Lambuth. A telegram from the Southern Baptist convention in Hot Springs, Ark, is read.
Washington reports the new American army has arrived in the zone of British operations in France and is likely to be brigaded and trained with British forces on the Flanders battlefront. The contingent is not detached from General Pershing’s forces but is part of a broader U. S. troop movement forecast by Premier Lloyd George.
Announcement from Paris reports American troops have reached the area in northern France under British control. It states cordial relations between British and American officers and soldiers.
May 17 report from Valdosta Georgia states farmer Hampton Smith was shot dead in his home by an assassin firing through a window. His wife Mrs Smith was wounded in the shoulder but escaped and identified a young Negro Sidney Johnson who worked for Smith as the alleged killer. Posses with dogs scour the countryside seeking the slayer.
A German progressive leader, Hausmann, told the Wurtemberg der Herr Hausmann that a fierce fifth winter of war is now inevitable. He urged Germans to face disappointment rather than expect victory in the summer.
Jack Benedict and John Black two black men were arraigned in municipal court before Judge J. Austin for larceny of a silk skirt valued at ten dollars from Allen store. The judge sent them to county roads for three months each and the skirt was returned to Mr. Allen. Arthur Brooks and Pearl Miller were found not guilty on the larceny charges in the same case after insufficient evidence. Mr. Silver attended court for his suit.
New York reports show an official statement followed by nervous, irregular fluctuations in cotton trading. Early session opened slightly higher in December and mostly declined, with July slipping to 25.25 and October to 24.38 before settling about 23 points net lower.
Dennis Jennings, a young white man, was arrested Tuesday for automobile larceny and broke from police later. He fled the station during quiet hours Thursday night and remains at large with warnings sent to state cities. A minister’s car stolen in South Carolina had the engine number altered to resemble Jennings’s victim vehicle.
A large crowd attended a lecture at First Baptist Church titled Europe and the War given by Dr. J. J. Wicker. The Richmond minister and revivalist concluded his visit and will move to Birmingham, Alabama for another revival.
Special reports to the treasury indicate the third Liberty loan has surpassed 4 billion dollars and may reach 4.25 billion with final tallies due next week.
A local committee announces the Creel matter will be dropped after review. Officials indicate no further action or public hearing is planned at this time.
George Creel, head of the public information committee, wrote to House Rules Chairman Pou denying intent to insult Congress in a New York address. Congress demanded an investigation, but leaders indicated the matter may be allowed to drop after Creel’s letter. Pou said the letter would be delivered and the committee planned further action.
Washington reports Porto Rican labor will be transported to the United States within a month for farms in southern states shipyards and other war industries along the Atlantic coast. Federal Employment Service and War Department arrange returns on transports to carry supplies to 15 000 drafted Porto Ricans at San Juan. About 79 000 are available and 10 000 have immediate employment with more to follow.
Washington reports 2200 interned Germans at Hot Springs North Carolina threatened mutiny after learning government plans to move them before July 1 to Fort Oglethorpe Georgia and McPherson Georgia. Guards were increased to maintain order as internees had invested savings in cottages expecting long-term wartime stay.
Berlin reports martial law in Odessa by the Austrian commandant at German request. Street fighting is described, and Austrian patrols are in Kiev while thousands flee. Berlin expects large imports of meat and grain shipments in July or August.
