German forces report limited progress on both the Western and Italian fronts as heavy artillery remains the main remaining challenge. High command expresses disappointment with fragile penetrations and slow gains despite advancing positions.
Heavy German bombardment tests American sectors as fighting shifts to Flanders Picardy and Arras. French and American forces repulse steps near Hill No 44 and near Hainles while Pershing assumes permanent command. Allied airmen strike targets behind German lines as Paris defense holds.
May 16 casualty list shows 91 names with eight killed in action and four dying of wounds. Included are Clyde W. Bolling of Winston-Salem and wounded soldiers Sergeant Claude N. Logan of Mooresville and Private Manning G. McCraw of Flat Rock.

Washington dispatch reports Italy informal request for several thousand U S troops on the Italian front to bolster morale of civilians and troops.
Six German units advance ten yards across the front in a coordinated push. A total of six German divisions are reported repositioning in the effort, signaling a intensified daylight assault.
Paris reports the Grosserail newspaper cites the general staff claiming about 150 German divisions are on the Franco-Belgian front from the North Sea to the Oise. It places 10 divisions between Nieuport and Ypres, 40 between Ypres and La Basse Canal, and 100 from La Basse Canal to the Oise.
Washington reports the death rate in national army and guard camps last week at its lowest since November. Total deaths were 162, down from 168, with increases in pneumonia and scarlet fever. In the week ending May 10, eight sick and wounded from the expeditionary forces in France landed at American ports. the receiving station was not reported.
Washington May 16 Immediate construction of 14 concrete tank steamers for the fuel oil trade with total capacity 105000 tons and four concrete cargo vessels with 12500 tons capacity was decided by the Shipping Board. The new ships join 18 concrete ships totalling 117500 tons already contracted. Eight of the new ships will be built on the Pacific coast and the others on the Atlantic coast.
In San Juan on May 16, about 700000 dollars of Panama canal and Porto Rico bonds held by six German insurance firms were seized by the government and credited to the alien property custodian. The bonds secured insurer risks in Porto Rico, where German agents had dominated much of the island’s insurance business. M B Spelman, representing enemy property custodian, cited further seizures or reports to Washington from Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

In Amsterdam on May 16 reports describe diners in Zwickau, Germany enjoying several hundred pounds of camel meat. Four camels were sold to butchers by the local menagerie after fodder shortages, yielding 300 to 400 pounds of meat each.
London reports artillery was active in the Somme and Ancre valleys east of Arras and on the Flanders battlefield. Our troops raided Gavrelle and captured a few prisoners while artillery activity continued on both sides at various points.

Amsterdam reporting for AP notes that the number of women at the eleven Prussian universities has grown about one third. Women total 3290 now, up from 2300 in 1914, reflecting wartime changes in higher education.
Rome reports an Austrian battleship of the Viribus Unitis class, a 20,000 ton vessel, torpedoed by Italian naval forces at Pola harbor early Tuesday. Italian seaplanes engaged Austrian aircraft as the raid unfolded. two Austrians were shot down and several others were out of control. Italian planes returned safely.
Charles Norfleet of Winston-Salem will speak at High Point’s Commercial Club on Monday at 8 PM about recruiting 1000 additional Y M C A secretaries per month for four months to serve overseas in France. The drive, led by Dr Howard Rondthaler and others, seeks business and professional volunteers with no public money required.
Hot Springs Ark May 16 for the first time women participate in convention deliberations. The convention granted women all church rights and many churches accredited women as representatives. Mrs A H Bedoe of Dallas was the first credentialed woman. More than 1700 delegates attend with a large Woman's Missionary Union presence as pension plans for ministers are discussed.
The cotton market opened steady on May 16 in New York with early prices up 12 to 25 points. Active months moved about 23 to 31 points. July traded at 25.31, October at 24.45 before the first hour, with futures showing July 25.30, October 24.40, December 24.24, and January 24.17.

Atlanta May 16 Bishop-Elect Frank N Parker declined election to a top Southern Methodist office after 24 hours of prayer saying he was not persuaded he was called by the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr Parker announced his action at the general conference. A. H Boaz of the Central Texas conference was elected secretary of church extension. he succeeds Bishop-elect W R McMurry.
The Rev James Cannon Jr of the Virginia conference was elected bishop at the Methodist Episcopal Church South general conference in Atlanta. Rev F N Larker of the Louisiana conference declined the office after prayer, saying he did not feel called to accept.
London reports a Vienna dispatch says Ukrainian agitation against Germany continues and accuses Berlin of aiding Russia. German actions, including mining the Yenikale strait, threaten Ukrainian sea routes and politics. Nikolaiev sees dismissed city leadership amid rising tensions. A local city lecture on Europe and the War is announced along with praise for a revival meeting at The Enterprise.
J. J. Griffith resigns as superintendent of the Stehli Silk plant to lead the new hosiery mill at Kernersville. J. H. Adams and associates, local buyers, have purchased the building and will install machinery soon. Griffith will oversee machinery installation after moving to Kernersville.
Tax sale tomorrow offers unusual bargains with property on which taxes remain unpaid to be sold at noon in front of city hall on Jordan Street. The listing has appeared in newspapers for weeks, and organizers seek full payment.
Nenes G. Baldwin of Roanoke Virginia was elected honorary commander-in-chief for life of the Sets of Confederate Veterans at a session of the executive council. Baldwin has been called for foreign services and the office was created for him. Carl Hirten of Denver was elected commander-in-chief to succeed Baldwin.
A Soviet protest to the German minister dated April 28 details Moscow’s note of intent to mobilize all necessary forces to secure the freedom and independence of the Russian Republic, now menaced beyond the limits set by the Brest treaty, per the State Department release from Washington.
Redmond May 16 A third venire of two men bringing the total to six was summoned to complete the jury for the case of Sir Lemuel J Johnston the young dentist accused of murdering his bride. Trial expected to begin tomorrow with witness examination.
