Splendid Talks At Federation Session Featured McKimmer

The morning session of the Federation of Womens Clubs highlighted Miss Gertrude Weil’s address and reports by officers and district chairmen. Mrs. Pennybacker of Texas spoke in the evening while Rev. Newlin opened with prayer and delegates praised district reciprocity efforts and club work across civics, health, and education initiatives.

School children parade lights up High Point streets

Thousands watched as about 1,600 pupils in 12 groups marched from Elm to South Main schools, led by Indian and colonial floats. The 80 minute pageant showcased uniforms costing an estimated 3000 dollars and praised by Federation of Women’s Clubs delegates.

Southern Permitted to Increase Rates

The Interstate Commerce Commission upheld increases in class rates on the Southern Railway main line from Danville Virginia to North Carolina points including Charlotte Greensboro Goldsboro Ramseur Ashboro Wilkesboro Mt Airy and Sanford branches. The hikes apply both directions with Danville merchants challenging only southbound rates. The commission ruled the higher rate reasonable.

England to Release Teutons Seized on China Voyage

London reports neutral circles expect the British Foreign Office to order the release of Austrians and Germans taken from the American steamer China from Shanghai to San Francisco on February 19. It may also disavow the Laurentic captain's seizure, noting the captives would have transshipped at Nagasaki, under Japanese jurisdiction.

Alleged Railroads Discussed Split of South

Washington May 4. Correspondence alleged to have passed between Milton H Smith of the Louisville and Nashville and Samuel Spencer of the Southern railroad concerning a divide the south pact was shown by counsel for the Interstate Commerce Commission during its inquiry into the L and N. The letters dated 1896 stem from a meeting at Kennesaw Georgia on October 18 1894.

Lorimer Acquitted by Jury in 1915 Bank Scandal

William Lorimer former United States senator was acquitted by a jury after a 79 day trial on charges of embezzlement and conspiracy related to the La Salle Street Trust and Savings Bank failure. The verdict ends his political rise and notes the broader Lorimer Munday bank network. Charles Munday was previously convicted of conspiracy. Lorimer vows to raise funds to reimburse depositors.
