Officials read the first part of Germanys note with disappointment and fear a break in diplomatic ties. President Wilson will decide after reviewing the official text, expected Sunday, with no action until then. The stance on immunity of merchant vessels and orders to submarines will shape the outcome.
ERLIN, May 5. The German reply to the American note on submarine warfare argues for restricting actions to fighting forces and neutrals should not expect concessions while Germany defends its survival. The note states ships in the war zone will be warned and life saved unless attacked ships resist or flee. Ambassador Gerard reported the response from Berlin to Washington, with two official views on US-Germany relations and potential actions.
The Royal Hosiery mill chartered with authorized capital of 100000 and 5400 paid in. J W Kearns to lead management as machinery worth about 10000 arrives soon. Located at 518 Hamilton Street the mill aims to produce half hose with 220 leader machines, expanding capacity over time.

Dublin reports four more rebel prisoners executed by court martial this morning. The men were Joseph Plunkett Edward Daly Michael O'Hanrahan and William Pearse. Sixty five others were sentenced to death but commuted to ten years penal servitude. one death sentence reduced to eight years. two rebels given ten years in prison.

Warren Illinois May 5 Mrs Angela R Canfield the only woman mayor in Illinois says she is tired of the job and will quit when her term ends next month She runs a millinery shop to supplement her 12 yearly mayoral pay and plans to move to California noting council resistance and a light hearted remark about the meaning of mayor She cites improvements such as curbing vice and speeding and promoting thrift in utilities while preparing to close her shop and leave town

A report from the Austro-Hungarian admiralty via Sayville describes a battle in the Adriatic between Italian and Austrian warships and aircraft. The message confirms hostilities between the two sides.
London May 5 A Zeppelin was destroyed yesterday by a British light cruiser squadron off the Schleswig coast an official government statement says The report notes the engagement occurred with no further details released by authorities
