Rebels Executed in Irish Proclamation Trial
Three signers of the republican proclamation of Ireland were tried by court martial, found guilty, and shot. Patrick Pearse, the provisional president of Ireland, and James Connolly, general of the Irish Republican Army, were executed. Thomas Clarke and Thomas MacDonough were also shot. three others received three year prison terms. Augustine Birrell resigned as chief secretary for Ireland.
