For the first six months of fiscal 1971 Lowe's reports sales of 73,220,202 and net earnings after taxes of 2,589,561, up 24 percent and 21 percent respectively from the prior year. Earnings per share rose to 62 cents from 51 cents.

About 2,500 demonstrators urged Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union and marched six blocks to the Soviet Embassy under police scrutiny. Police blocked access, then moved in after warnings of arrest for obstructing a public highway. Most demonstrators complied as officers dragged one participant. only one resisted.

Louis Armstrong known as Satchmo, 70, is reported by his doctor to be recovering from a heart condition that sent him to Beth Israel Hospital on March 15. Dr Gary Zucker said he sat up in a chair and took his first oral feeding since admission, describing him as in high spirits.
The American Friends Service Committee cites child labor in U S agriculture comparing it to the 1938 sweatshop scene. A survey across five states finds children as young as six on farms, often in extreme heat for long hours, with some regions using teachers to recruit youths for farm work.
