British Women Sail Ship Newport for Bicentennial Voyage
A crew of 42 young British women finished a 632 mile Atlantic crossing aboard the Sir Winston Churchill to Newport, Rhode Island, in celebration of the US Bicentennial. The voyage began in Plymouth and Bermuda, ending amid cheers as the ship joined a forthcoming fleet to New York Harbor. The crew, aged 16 to 25, endured seasickness and hard training under Captain Patrick Collis, with Penelope MacGregor Williams declaring the trip tough but life-changing.
