Changes In Party Opposed

Supporters of Jimmy Carter showed little interest in major reform at the Democratic Party national convention in New York. The Rules Committee defeated or sent to study nearly all substantial change proposals over two days, while Republican delegate contests in five states shaped the 1980 race. Reagan cut Ford's delegate lead, with 1,005 pledged to Reagan and 932 to Ford. remaining delegates total 130 with 164 uncommitted. In Iowa Ford split 19 to 17, Washington state gave Reagan 17 to Ford 7, Delaware went Ford 12 with five uncommitted, Texas backed Reagan with four at large, and Colorado awarded Reagan three in a single district. The Democratic push to change vice presidential selection failed. The 1980 VP nominee would have had to run in a presidential primary if proposals had passed.
